Route 20 Crosswalk ADA Retrofit Project to Start Soon

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation will soon be starting a state-funded project to retrofit the crosswalks at the intersections of Middlefield Road, Route 20, and West Main Street. This will entail increasing the current bump-out on the corner by the Cornerstone Church and retrofitting the sidewalks to make them shorter and safer to cross the roads for people with disabilities. The project engineer has promised that the contractor will maintain ADA accessibility throughout the project and will work to minimize disruption to motor vehicle traffic and pedestrians.

The Town has notified the Mass DOT about upcoming events like Chester on Track (May 17) and Memorial Day (May 26) and the project engineer has agreed to try to minimize disruption as much as possible.

Americans with Disabilities Act retrofits are being conducted in numerous towns, including Chester, Dalton, Great Barrington, Lee, North Adams, Pittsfield, Otis, Russell, Williamsburg, and Williamstown.

Once started, the project should be completed within 4-6 weeks.
